The idea came to SJ when he was a successful point fighter down in Texas and had to decide on whether to continue fighting with medical conditions that could adversely affect his life or quit fighting altogether. He chose the latter, even though martial arts is what he had lived for.

In 2003, while attending graduate courses, his professor gave the class an odd assignment. Instead of writing a thesis with 40 to 50 pages of fluff, he challenged the class to write a business plan for any business they preferred. SJ always wanted to be where the fights were and sports bars in Texas have immense popularity, so he decided to write a business plan based on a sports bar with live MMA fighting.
